Letter from the President: Passion’s Place in the Office

Over the years I’ve gotten to know some of you very well, and others I have not yet had the opportunity to meet. Those meeting me for the first time might label me a case manufacturer, but they wouldn’t be 100% right. After three decades of being in this business, I’ve found that manufacturing cases is not what gets me out of bed in the morning — it’s thinking about what those cases allow for that does.

The success of some of the world’s most important medical, technological, and ecological innovations is dependent upon their ability to arrive in the same condition they were sent.

• Take, for example, the Flumist vaccine. The climate controlled case we designed allows this temperature-sensitive inoculation to reach doctors’ offices uncompromised, ultimately protecting thousands of patients from sickness.

• We’re also proud to build protective cases for delicate camera equipment—putting news cameramen at ease with the notion that their important and valuable gear will be safe as they travel to dangerous or exotic locations, and ensuring that we can witness important events as they unfold around the world.

• And it’s rewarding to contribute to the nation’s counterterrorism efforts by designing rugged laptop cases for mass transit groups who investigate threats against our safety, offering us peace of mind on a daily basis.

For these very serious demands or even the more recreational needs — ensuring moviegoers a great night out by delivering reeled films to theaters unharmed, or providing golfers with the security of knowing their drivers will be in tact for that all-important Pebble Beach tee time — we are motivated by the knowledge that we provide security and insurance for every precious asset.

I know that I’m not alone in a search to contribute something with meaning. You might be familiar with the story about two old guys chipping away at stone at a massive construction site. One looked haggard, the other was older, but he looked happy.

“What are you doing here?” a passerby asked the haggard man?
“Chipping this damn stone — day in, and day out,” he said.
The passerby turned to the other man and asked him the same question.
The old man perked up and said, “I’m building a great cathedral!”

Finding a “cathedral” in everything we do at Source has not only inspired and encouraged us — it has also made our work a lot more fun.

To discuss these ideas, or how we can help build your cathedral, email me at aadler@casesbysource.com.

Yours,

The Dangers of D.I.Y.
The news has been horrific. Kids’ toys are recalled daily and international purchases have become fraught with concern and insecurity. Are you connecting with reputable vendors? Are they cutting corners and taking advantage of cheap labor and perceived anonymity?

How can you be sure?

It’s no secret that the wealth of information available on the Internet has made life easier and more efficient. Online research and shopping can offer unparalleled convenience and insight: price comparison, customer reviews, and cost effectiveness — 24/7, from wherever you are. But how much is that convenience worth if you aren’t connecting with the most reputable resources.

Ordering a custom-designed and expertly engineered case isn’t as easy as it sounds. Case manufacturing is a skillfully choreographed process in which multiple sources work together to produce a customized showcase for your most important wares.

Without the proper background, however, manufacturing is an easily foiled process. Independently outsourcing a case order can lead to a multitude of nightmares, including:

• Fraud and financial deception
• Language or cultural barriers
• Time differences
• Miscalculated shipping charges
• Customs holdups
• Inadequate customer support
• Quality control issues
• Violation of intellectual property regulations

But don’t just take our word for it. We were recently approached by someone who had ordered 4,000 cases (because of minimums) directly from China. The price was right and, upon arrival, everything looked great. But as his sales reps continued to use the cases for presentations, the client found that the cases were noticeably susceptible to daily wear and tear and ultimately started to fall apart. The cases weren’t bad cases, but they were incorrectly designed for the task at hand.

The cases were constructed to hold 20 pounds; the products placed inside weighed more than twice that. Without a design background, however, the customer was at the vendor’s mercy. He did his due diligence, perhaps, but due diligence is only as good as the questions asked and answered. In the end, the customer got burned.

In his effort to save time and money by working independently, the customer was left with a major headache and 4,000 useless cases — an expensive trade-off, and one that could have been avoided by partnering with an expert upfront. The lesson isn’t a new one: The seemingly cheapest option is typically not the most economical solution in the end.

Unfortunately that experience is not an isolated one. A 2004 Accenture Executive Survey participant observed, “You can’t tell from a proposal what [your finished product] is going to be like. You have to fully understand the contractor’s culture, ethos and aims.” Added another, “[successful outsourcing] requires a nuanced approach to setting up and managing. The practice is as much about building relationships based on trust and mutual respect as it is about cost effectiveness and efficiency.”

We are not talking about the dangers of overseas production that lead to things like combustible PC batteries or quality control issues that have created an international lead paint crisis. We know that many overseas suppliers produce high quality, reliable products. But you have to know those quality suppliers. You need to have relationships — or guanxi, as it’s known in China.

Over the last 22 years, Cases By Source has built and nurtured dependable, time-honored partnerships with both domestic and overseas vendors. We are choreographers, and the single-source provider for your custom case requirements. From design to completion, and everything in between, Cases By Source will work with you to ensure the result is exactly what you want.

Prognosis: Better Presentations and Thriving Sales
One of our clients came to us with a quandary: The company’s sales team had the responsibility of presenting to the time-starved medical community an array of complex, fragile spinal implants designed for intricate, life-altering surgeries.

Our challenge was to design a protective solution that would also promote product presentation for these innovative devices. The package needed to be as compelling as the product — and as efficient as the doctors needed the pitch to be.

The presentation case we developed resulted in a "win" for everyone. Sales calls were more efficient, doctors learned about the latest technology, and patients ultimately received the most appropriate and advanced implant available. How’d this happen? Read on:

Client Problem: “We have several sizes of a medical implant that our sales consultants need to carry around in their cars and trucks, into hospitals, storage areas, etc. Needless to say, the implants can get banged around quite a bit and need protection from these environments.”

The gym bags and cardboard boxes the sales force had previously been using consumed valuable time during visits with doctors. The packages weren’t only clumsy and unprofessional, but also made it difficult to locate products quickly for comparison.

Recommendation:
We wanted to help our client build a professional and well-thought-out presentation mechanism — one in which the parts would be protected and easily accessible, and one that would also help make wise use of the limited time the sales consultants had with healthcare professionals.

We look to custom soft-sided cases to provide an attractive, versatile, and lightweight option for presentation, organization, and protection of valuable merchandise. Perfect for sales demonstrations, these cases can be fitted with a number of value-added options including: fabric selection; sewn fabric or foam inserts; sectioned pockets and compartments; removable trays; structural padding and support; embroidery, hot-stamping or silk-screened multi-color logos; reinforced carrying handles for heavy loads; detachable and adjustable shoulder straps; and various closures. If you can imagine it, in most instances it can be done.

Cases By Source’s Solution:
The Cases By Source sales representative, designer, and engineer produced a padded canvas, cloth bound, soft-sided case with three-color embroidered branding, metal-reinforced carrying handles, and a removable shoulder strap with adjustable hardware and metal snap hooks.

The inside lid boasted a clear vinyl pocket stitched to form two separate display sections with zipper closures. A removable cross-linked polyethylene foam tray was fitted into the bottom of the case, with 36 compartments of two different sizes for product organization. Taking into account the delicate nature of the company’s products, we designed the tray with a step so that products would be flush with the top level of the step to ensure protection from impact and also easily accessed during a demonstration.

Client satisfaction: “The soft case we co-developed with Cases by Source not only protects the implants but also organizes them to allow for easy identification and quick retrieval, thus minimizing any potential confusion when discussing with doctors the most appropriate implant for a patient.”

Let us help you: At Cases By Source, We can design custom cases to suit your special requirements, or transform a stock case into a unique package that will showcase and secure your valuable merchandise.

Between Goldilocks and a Hard Case
ife isn’t a fairy tale, but that doesn’t preclude our rights to happy endings. So if Goldilocks can find the right chair, porridge, and place to rest, why shouldn’t you be able to find the perfect case?

In the spirit of continuing to develop a product line of cases that are “just right” for every need, Cases By Source has partnered exclusively with Hofbauer, a leading European manufacturer of injection- and blow-molded cases. The result is a new line of cases even Goldilocks would endorse. Sleek and stylized, these cases are a cost-effective solution designed to organize, complement, and showcase your products. And, they are functional and strong. Strong as a bear, perhaps.

For more than one hundred years, the name Hofbauer has been associated with innovation and quality. The family-owned company was founded in 1902 and cases, boxes, and containers originally made of wood, leather, and metal have always been a part of their business. Exquisitely crafted luggage trunks made for cars in Hofbauer’s early days are still on display in their offices today.

Prior to our work with the venerable company, there weren’t many options in between a basic blow-molded case and a rugged, waterproof Pelican-style case. Hofbauer cases fill the void. The cases command attention from those in the industry (who actually think cases can be cool), and even from those who aren’t. They always evoke surprise, getting the response, “Wow, what’s that?” They are sleek and sophisticated, yet functional and efficient. Consistently the head-turners of our offerings, some might even call them sexy.

Each attractive case in Hofbauer's product line is lightweight, durable, and economical — lending unique advantages for an endless list of applications. Custom options are available for each case including, an array of colors and sizes, shoulder straps, metal lid stays, pull handles with wheels, and flexible latch and handle colors.

As a complement, Cases By Source can provide its reputable, value-added solutions, including: spot-on color matches, silk-screened or hot-stamped branding, expertly engineered and fabricated partitions and foam inserts, and custom-molded interiors.

It’s all about flexibility. Many of the cases are designed with interchangeable parts that would even impress Henry Ford, streamlining the manufacturing process while giving customers more options. Latches and handles can easily be swapped out for different colors. In larger volumes, custom colors are available: If Tiffany & Co. wants a case to match its signature blue box, or Home Depot wants a container in orange, it can be done.

The Hofbauer product line is manufactured using two different processes injection molding and extrusion blow molding — and the cases are subjected to stringent tests for strength, durability, and function. The Hofbauer injection molded series yields a single-wall case more conducive to lighter-weight and highly-stylized designs. Alternatively, the double-wall construction of extrusion blow molding offers extremely strong and shock resistant cases. Impact is absorbed via the combination of polypropylene and an air cushion created between the inner and outer walls. This process allows a custom interior to be molded directly into the inner wall of the case. Envision a ratchet set with the custom molded cavities to hold the tools. Now step it up a notch. Hofbauer custom blow molded cases are the ratchet set… on steroids.

Whatever your carrying case requirements may be, Source can supply a solution.

…And we can all live happily ever after.
