Letter from the President: Industry Leaders and Shapers

February's arrival reminds us to celebrate the many great people who shaped our country. But what about the lesser-known “heroes,” like the inventors who molded our industries and laid the foundation for the work we do each day? At Cases By Source, we think Otto Bayer deserves a “Standing O,” if not his own holiday.

Otto Bayer is best known for his invention of polyurethane chemistry—long story short and in laymen’s terms: the science that gave us foam. In all of its incarnations, foam has played—and continues to play—a major role in almost every industry and application: In your home, it’s in the insulation, furniture and carpet cushioning; in your car, it’s in the seats and dashboards; in your kids’ playroom, it’s the NERF football; in the marine industry, it’s in coatings and paints, and in aerospace it’s in windmill and airplane wings.

And, of course, in a case, it’s the custom foam interior that keeps your products and instrumentation organized and protected.

Otto Bayer’s innovations helped to shape the case industry. Sure, if he hadn’t developed foam, we might have other options to serve similar functions or someone else might’ve come across the science a little later. But—in the mindset of ‘everything happens for a reason’—Bayer’s technology allows us to offer the solutions that helped us earn our reputation as a world-class case manufacturer.

So thank you, Otto. I won’t be closing the office in your honor, but I am grateful for your contributions to our company's success.

Case Study: Soft Cases For Soft Drinks
Have you ever wondered how beverages taste almost identical around the globe? It's all about the syrup, right? Wrong. Water is a key component. But the water's consistency and integrity are dependent on the packaging used during transport. From Bangalore to Bel Air, Cases By Source helps to deliver the soft-drink tastes you have grown to love.

Client Problem
:
Plastic corrugated shipping containers with foam inserts proved an unsuccessful solution for our client’s complicated task of transporting liquids from
far-off, sometimes Third-World nations, to testing facilities on all corners of the globe. The bottles shattered, the boxes buckled, and unpredictable temperature fluctuations easily overwhelmed the packages. Igloo coolers may work for transporting human organs for transplant, but they were not a reliable, long-term packaging solution for this company’s needs. So they came to Cases By Source for help.

Our Recommendation: The combination of the client’s sensitive but weighty—75 pounds—payload and a fair-but-limiting budget presented us with quite a challenge, but one we knew we could handle. We knew the client needed to maintain a critical temperature range for sometimes week-long stretches. On top of that, the company rightfully wanted to maintain their time-honored brand integrity and imprint.

Our original approach appeared to be ideal: A customized, blow-molded, double-wall MegaCase with molded interiors for product security, an outer case for protection, and special phase gels for temperature control. The MegaCase series is rugged but lightweight, impact resistant, weather resistant, and can carry loads up to 88 pounds. Unfortunately, it still wasn’t the right fit; cold-chamber testing proved that the interior couldn’t cool down enough for the customer’s needs.

Cases By Source’s Solution: Drawing upon our experience with the medical industry, we designed a soft-side case with a top-loading tray insert constructed of expanded polypropylene foam engineered to increase air flow. We customized the insert to protect the payload, while allowing the temperature to be maintained within the critical tolerance.

Flexible soft-side cases are not bound by size limitations and they also boast a broad range of value-added options. In addition, they can easily accommodate the expanding and contracting phase gels used to maintain the payload's temperature.

We built the cases of ballistic nylon strong enough to withstand world-wide travel, handling, and environmental fluctuations. The outer, rectangular case was strengthened with firm polyethylene foam sewn into the lining of waterproof nylon that was added to keep the cold air inside. Molded plastic corners were also attached to the exterior to maintain shape and ruggedize the solution.

For ease of handling we added recessed inline-skate wheels doubled up to support the heavy payload, and a handle with an ergonomic rubber grip for comfort. The final addition of document pouches and silk-screened branding and handling information established these cases as the optimal packaging solution for the client's needs.

Client Satisfaction: Still in the testing phase, the cases have energized the client’s approach to a 2008 initiative. The protection, organization, and efficiency our design provides will be invaluable tools for the success of a project that will further solidify their position as high-profile beverage-industry leaders.
