Letter from the President: Gold Medal Achievements in Case Design

Watching the summer Olympics last month, I found myself (as many do) impressed and inspired by the athletes’ determination and commitment. To most of us, qualifying for the Competition is a major accomplishment in and of itself but, to the athletes, there’s an undeniable— and often palpable—hunger that propels them to the Games…a need to be the best at what they do. It’s a yearning intrinsic to so many of us—be our passion sports, the arts, technology, science or even, perhaps, case design, most of us push ourselves to be the best at whatever it is we do.

Every day at Cases By Source, we push ourselves. Perhaps not to the physical extent of the Olympians, but to the extent that will help us cement a worldwide reputation as a Great Case Company. We dig deep to provide the best case solutions available anywhere; we challenge ourselves to anticipate, understand, and exceed every customer’s unique requirements; we make it our driving goal to deliver high quality and great value. And, in a not-so-obvious nod to the Olympics, we endeavor to secure and nurture global partnerships with customers and suppliers.

For the last 23 years, we have been committed to making these things happen. It has been a collaborative effort, and one in which every Source staff member plays a role. So it’s with great pride that I announce Source’s recent ‘gold medal’ achievements: our placement on the Inc. 5000 list of the fastest-growing private companies in America, and our designation as a finalist for the New York Enterprise Report’s 2008 Small Business Awards.

Being appointed to the Inc. 5000 list places Cases By Source “among an elite group that over the years has included Microsoft, Timberland, Cold Stone Creamery, Go Daddy, Intuit, Jamba Juice, Oracle, and UnderArmour. Many of today's most successful U.S. companies received their first public recognition when they appeared on the Inc. list.”

The esteemed group of judges at The New York Enterprise Report has chosen Source as a best practice finalist—one of six Metro-NY-based companies—in the Technology category for the Small Business Awards. Winners will be announced later this month but—regardless of the outcome—our designation as a finalist is a great honor and accomplishment for our employees and company and further validation that we are building a Great Company.

It’s unlikely that we’ll be asked to appear on a Wheaties box anytime soon (or a Frosted Flakes one for that matter), but that won’t deter our commitment and determination to achieving our goal of solidifying a stance as the premier provider of custom cases. As we move toward realization of that goal, we will not only continue to provide educated and congenial customer service, but we will also continue to raise the bar for ourselves and for our industry.

There are many exciting things in the pipeline for the coming months. I’m especially looking forward to the launch of our new and improved Web site. Casesbysource.com will not only feature a new appearance, but will also introduce hundreds of new products and informative case information.

Thank you for being a part of our continuous evolution.

Case Closed: Stock Case + Imagination = Custom Solution

We never underestimate the power of "chicken scratch." Sometimes, the most interesting and inspiring ideas for case customization come from enterprising clients with specific needs. In this “case,” a soldier, firefighter, and law-enforcement officer who uses his experiences on the front lines to train and protect others.

Our client, a specialist on active duty for the Pennsylvania National Guard Security Force Platoon, wanted to custom build a “Combat Crewman Camera System” for mounting on armored military tactical vehicles and use in various missions and training procedures. The platoon provides personal security for high-ranking military officials; every bit of information gained is vital to their success. On the home front, the client intends to incorporate the system for use in his career as a SWAT instructor and firefighter and fire and emergency services instructor. Having a "bird's eye" vantage point would provide undeniable advantages for training.

The client came to us with a napkin sketch and a fixed budget. “I wanted a self-contained video system that could record DVD quality video and audio. I chose the camera system first and, after drawing up some ideas and looking at the pros and cons, I choose to pair it with a Pelican case.  I knew that Pelican was now making self-contained lighting systems, so I also wanted the ability to mount the cameras on the case.

“Lucky for me Cases By Source’s display of cases was extensive.  [I chose] the Pelican 1490 because it was the thinnest case available that still gave me the thickness I needed and also offered locking latches.”

The PC-1490 is watertight, crushproof and dustproof. It is lightweight and strong due to an open-cell structural foam molding process that forms a solid wall design. It features a gasket seal and automatic purge valve; stainless-steel hardware; double safety locking latches with keys, and a comfortable rubber-molded handle. The case’s base is filled with Pick ‘N’ Pluck foam; the lid has convoluted foam.

We designed a custom interior to meet the client’s specifications and he did the rest: He mounted multiple XLR connectors on the case and added handles for immobilization during transit and to allow him to open the case without disturbing the camera positions. He also installed several camera pedestal mounts on the case for maximum visibility at a wide range of angles and added other modifications to protect the case from moisture.

To complete the system, the client purchased an Otter Waterproof Case (OC-1000) and converted it into an SD card holder. He also customized a Pelican 1400 (PC-1400) for use as a support case. It stores the rest of the camera system parts, including the mounting brackets, the Otter case with the SD cards, and the camera pedestal extension mounts.

After a few weeks the system was complete and ready for action. Now stationed in the Middle East, our client has already had the opportunity to use his Combat Crewman Camera System. He has received rave reviews from his unit and plans to design additional systems for a multitude of applications. In a recent email he said, “Other than needing to work out some bugs, it’s great! I guess it shows what a napkin and pen can do with a little creative thinking.”
